Passed midnight on Thursday, June 3, flight AA 946 departed from Quito International Airport headed to Miami, becoming American Airline’s third daily frequency from Ecuador’s capital city airport to the United States.

This third daily American Airlines flight represents a growth of 48.1% in seats compared to 2019, making visible the gradual, yet sustained recovery of air traffic in Quito, the country and the region. The new flight, which will depart from Quito every morning at 01:30 AM and will arrive in Miami at 06:50 AM, will be operated on board a Boeing 737 MAX, with capacity for 172 passengers, and will leave Miami every day at 9:29 PM, arriving at the Quito International Airport at 12:30 AM.

At the opening ceremony of the flight, carried out with all the sanitary protection measures, authorities of the Ministry of Tourism, as well as representatives of the airline and the Quito airport expressed the importance of the historic air connection between Quito and the United States.

“We are excited to announce additional frequencies to Miami, from the two main airports in Ecuador. We have a commitment of more than three decades with Ecuador and we will continue to bet on this market,” said Omar Nottaro, American's Director of Operations in Ecuador and Colombia. In addition, he commented that the resumption of air operations in Ecuador, on June 1, 2020, was the model that prompted the restart of regional operations, and thanked Ecuador for leading the biosecurity processes that are carried out at the Quito airport.

Ana García Pando, Vice Minister of Tourism, mentioned during the inaugural event that “it is an honor to share with the industry the international trust that Corporación Quiport, its partners, investors and workers have generated by developing pioneering biosafety protocols and processes in the continent".

Ramón Miró, President and CEO of Quiport, congratulated American Airlines for its decision to increase three daily frequencies to Miami, the most successful route from Mariscal Sucre Airport, and added: “this third daily American Airlines flight from Quito is not more than a reliable proof of, on the one hand, the promising panorama of the recovering air transport industry and, on the other, a bet on Quito and Ecuador. We thank the airline for this vote of confidence and we promise to reciprocate it with the careful and diligent work that characterizes Quito airport."
