Biotic Monitoring
of the Caraburo Plateau
We carry out annual monitoring of flora and fauna (birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles) in compliance with the Environmental Management Plan and authorization by the Zonal Direction 2 – Pichincha of the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition.
In the 2022 monitoring, the following relevant data was obtained:
- Flora: 442 individuals corresponding to 20 species were recorded. Two of them are endemic to Ecuador: Croton elegans and Opuntia soederstromiana.
- Mammals: the species Lycalopex culpaeus (Andean Fox) is the species of greatest ecological importance due to its role as controller of populations of other species and disperser of seeds and pollen.
- Birds: 809 individuals of 52 species were registered. The Shannon index obtained a value of H’ = 3.23 and catalogs the study area with a moderately high diversity.
- Herpetofauna: five herpetofauna species were recorded (two amphibians and three reptiles). One of them is endemic to Ecuador: Gastrotheca Riobambae.
